It's worth getting in a good pair of motorcycle boots if you ride. They should be part of your overall riding protective clothing, and they will help protect your feet and ankles.
There are two basic types, shorty boots and full length boots.
Shorty boots are also knows as ankle-length boots or 3/4 length boots. They are about six inches tall and do not have as much protection as full length boots.
Full length boots, which are also called Tour Boots or Tall Biker Boots, Full length Boots. These are around 9 to 11 inches tall and will have better ankle and overall foot/leg protection.
Boots will protect you from a variety of hazards including protection from flying road debris and loose gravel, burns from exhaust pipes , and if you have an accident they can protect you from abrasions and lesson the impact to your foot, ankle, and lower leg.
Mens motorcycle boots (or womens motorcycle boots either) were never designed for general daily wear or fashion, although many people do wear them for that purpose.
If you ride, make sure you get real riding boots, not look alike knock
offs for wannabe bikers. Well known and respected brands include Red Wing,
Sidi
, and Harley Davidson
among others.
If you ride a sport or dirt bike, there are motorcycle boots designed
specifically for those types of bikes. Three well respected makes are Thor,
Alpinestar
, and Fox
.

They should have short heels so can move your feet and let them sit easily on the motorcycle pegs while simultaneously providing good ankle support. Most soles are rubber based, are oil resistant, and have good traction. they get a lot of wear and tear obviously and are usually both glued and stitched on.
Waterproof motorcycle boots will not keep your feet dry very long in a downpour, but hopefully for 10 or so minutes until you find cover. Riding in heavy rain isn't usually recommended.
Some boots also have ventilation to help keep your feet cool, especially during long rides and in the summer.
I like boots that zip or buckle, instead of ones that use Velcro or laces. It's partially personal choice, but I'm always afraid of laces. If you have lace up boots, tuck the laces in. This will keep them out of the chain and from catching on the footpeg when you put your foot down.
A good pair of motorcycle boots should last you for years.
